INYO COUNTY JAIL INFORMATION
This jail is most famous – or infamous as the case may be – as the site of the initial hearings for the Manson Family following their deadly raid on the Barker Ranch.
The Inyo County Sheriff s Department is primarily responsible of providing law enforcement patrol and response in this area, and it has also been contracted to maintain both pre-trial arrestees and inmates who have been sentenced and are serving time in the county jail.
The county has a very diverse population and some of them live in very remote areas. Add a wildly fluctuating increase in people when tourists are mixed into the equation and you can see that this is no easy task. In addition to the county jail, the sheriff’s office is responsible to answer all 911 emergency calls and dispatch, plus civil and bailiff Services, and enforcement of court orders. They also provide labor, expertise, special equipment for search and rescue and disaster relief.
People who are taken into custody by the Bishop police are taken to their station where they can be held up to 8 hrs. Arrestees are then transferred to the Inyo County Jail, which houses both men and women who are awaiting trial and/or serving time. It’s a relatively small jail that only holds about 180 inmates. ICJ offers a wide variety of inmate services and provides counseling programs. Items can be purchased through their commissary, only. Inmates can receive money orders, but they are not allowed to take any cash, personal checks, or debit/credit cards from friends or family members.
Bail can be posted at the both the police station during its hours of operation, and at the jail 24/7. Because this station is relatively small, release time takes only one to two hours and a bit longer at the county jail.
At Inyo, visitors interact with inmates behind a glass window and via telephone. Children under 12 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Only two adults and one child may visit an inmate at any one time. You can only see an inmate once per day and then for 30 minute visits. Visitors must call the jail at 8:00 AM of the day they want to schedule their visit prior to coming in. Anyone who is on probation or is a parolee will not be allowed to visit. Visiting hours are Saturday and Sunday from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM.
Persons taken into custody by the Inyo County Sheriff are brought to the Inyo County Jail. Release time is relatively immediate. All release times are approximate and subject to change according to the work load of the jail operations staff. The Jail does not allow inmates to receive any outside calls.
